Visiting San Venanzo
San Venanzo, a small municipality of the province of Terni, develops amidst the lush plains and thick woods that surround Mount Peglia. A highly appreciated tourist centre for gourmets and the lovers of nature, San Venanzo also gathers important archaeological areas and outstanding medieval monuments of great value.
Hotels in San Venanzo, that boast breathtaking views over the underlying territories, give both families and groups of friends the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here while taking advantage of modern comforts and excellent services and facilities. The old town is scattered with charming guest houses and intimate bed and breakfasts, that give tourists the possibility to take advantage of cheap prices and affordable rates. Gourmets won't miss the opportunity to stay at the fascinating farm houses of the surrounding area, that give them the possibility to taste excellent local staples and traditional recipes from Umbria.
The most important Etruscan settlement of the surrounding area is the lovely village of Poggio delle Civitelle, that has recently been unearthed here. San Venanzo was founded in the VIII century, but it achieved the utmost splendour in the period of the medieval city-republics. The city centre was once dominated by the imposing Mondaldeschi Castle, that belonged to a powerful family from Orvieto who ruled over a wide area between 1200 and 1300. Today, some elements of the castle have been incorporated into the local Villa, that was built in the nineteenth century and is now the seat of the local municipality. It cherishes precious paintings and decorations that once belonged to the ancient church of St.Venanzo.
San Venanzo makes the ideal base for undertaking exciting tours across the medieval castles and worship places of the surrounding area, such as St. Vito in Monte, Collelungo, the Sanctuary of Madonna della Luce, Civitella dei Conti and Ripalvella.
The lovers of nature, sport and outdoor activities will have the possibility to head to the nearby hamlets of San Marino and Ospedaletto, that are scattered with lush pinewood forests, green parks and enchanting natural reserves.
