Life in San Giuseppe Vesuviano revolves around Mount Vesuvius. In 1906 the volcano erupted, and the accumulation of ash and volcanic material destroyed the city and killed many people. Today, San Giuseppe Vesuviano boasts a modern town layout whose major monument is the nineteenth/twentieth-century Sanctuary of St. Giuseppe with its splendid facade.
San Giuseppe Vesuviano's most important district is the quarter of Santa Maria La Scala. This thriving hamlet is livened up by plenty of funny fairs and festivals, such as the festival of the so-called “Zeppola di San Giuseppe” and the festival of the homemade pasta. For some years now, San Giuseppe Vesuviano has hosted LIFE, an important cultural festival dedicated to the art of reading and writing.
