San Giovanni in Persiceto, a small municipality of the province of Bologna, is situated just in the heart of the north-western plain of the regional capital, and develops along the western banks of the stream Samoggia and the river Reno. The small hamlet of San Matteo della Decima, that develops 9 kilometres far from the municipal capital, is home to the wonderful Villa or Castle of Giovannina, that was commissioned by Giovanni II di Bentivoglio in 1504. Surrounded by four high merloned towers, this four-sided building still retains the typical aspect of the ancient medieval structures of the surrounding area, and stands out as an important example of the transformation of a fortress into an elegant stately home.
The interesting Museum of Sky and Earth attracts large numbers of tourists, since it contains a precious natural history exhibition and four important structures: "G. Abetti" astronomy observatory, a botanical garden, a weather forecast station and the popular Planetarium.
