San Bartolomeo al Mare, a small municipality of the province of Imperia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the lower valley of the river Cervo, and extends across the charming Western Ligurian Riviera. This popular tourist centre develops across the eastern side of the province, and is situated 9 kilometres far from the provincial capital. It is subdivided into three charming hamlets: San Bartolomeo, Pairola and Chiappa.

The city's most representative building is the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rovere, that was erected in the first half of the sixteenth century. This Neoclassical masterpiece boasts an ancient slate portal dating back to 1553 that is embellished by a splendid bas relief depicting the Annunciation. The old town is dominated by the high pointed bell tower of the parish church of St. Bartolomeo, the city's patron saint. This building, that was erected in the late Middle Ages, still retains a prestigious sixteenth-century polyptych and a marble font dating back to 1483. The nearby Chiappa's rural village is commanded by the sumptuous XVII-century Church of St. Giacomo and Mauro. Its interior cherishes an important Roman milestone and a marble statue depicting Our Lady of the Rosary.
Every year, the city is home to an important international instrumental and vocal contest, the so-called Rovere d'Oro. This interesting cultural event, that has now reached its 25ª edition, is held every summer in the church square of the sanctuary of Madonna della Rovere.
