Visiting Salve

Salve, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, rises on the top of the gentle hill which overlooks the lower Salentine Peninsula, and is situated 4 kilometres far from the Ioanian coastline. Salve's major attractions are the enchanting seaside resorts of the surrounding area, that is to say Pescoluse, Torre Pali, Posto Vecchio and Lido Marini.

Hotels in Salve, which are situated along the local coastline, are provided with welcoming bedrooms and large panoramic balconies. The local guest houses, which rise a short distance from the sea, are the ideal accommodation facilities for both tourists and business travellers. Salve's charming farm houses, which are surrounded by a lush Mediterranean scrub, and intimate bed and breakfasts give guests the possibility to spend unforgettable holidays here based on the utmost rest and relax.

Salve's most representative religious building is the Church of St. San Nicola Magno, the city's patron saint, which was built between the VIII and the XVI century. Its interior cherishes precious paintings dating back to 1600, as well as one of the oldest and most important organs in the whole Apulia. "Olgiati-Mauro" Organ, which dates back to 1628, is a wooden organ featuring beautiful golden carvings whose rectangular wind-chest is surmounted by a sumptuous pediment.
The old town is dominated by Torre dei Montano, which was erected in 1415 to protect the city against Saracen attacks. This fortress, which has quadrangular plan, is flanked by four semi-circular side towers provided with plenty of hidden loopholes.
One of Salve's most important palaces is the seventeenth-century Palazzo Ceuli, which boasts an elegant facade featuring beautiful floral decorations and an eighteenth-century Baroque staircase.
Not to be missed are the remains of the coastal Torre Pali, which gave its name to the homonymous seaside resort. The building, which was concluded 1563, was built twenty metres far from the coastline, on the top of a high cliff which falls sheer to the sea.
