Visiting Russi
Russi, a small municipality of the province of Ravenna, is idyllically set just in the heart of the fertile Po Valley, and develops halfway between the courses of the rivers Lamone and Montone. Situated about 17 kilometres far from the capital, it hosts an important archaeological area where one of the most important and best-preserved Roman Villas of Emilia-Romagna was unearthed during extensive excavation work.
Hotels in Russi, that are situated few kilometres far from Ravenna, give guests the possibility to take advantage of comfortable bedrooms and modern comforts. The local guest houses, that are idyllically set just in the heart of the enchanting naturalistic settings of the surrounding area, also give tourists the possibility to take advantage of well-kept spaces, spacious meeting rooms and modern conference facilities. Russi's farm houses, that distribute across the lush local plain, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in tasting delicious local staples from the surrounding area.
The city's most important historic-architectural remains are the ruins of the Roman Villa that was unearthed in 1938 two kilometres far from the old town. This complex, that was built around the end of the I century B.C., gathers a residential area, that is embellished by precious mosaic floors of great beauty, a wide productive centre and a spacious thermal area.
The city centre, that is totally encircled by impressive medieval walls, cherishes the remains of the ancient Manfrediana Fortress, that was erected in 1371. This square-shaped structure was surrounded by three corner towers and a cylindrical keep, while the northern side of the castle was dominated by an imposing donjon whose lower part is still visible.
The interior of the fortress is now home to the Civic Museum of the Castle, that is subdivided into 3 distinct sections: the Municipal Picture Gallery, that gathers precious artworks depicting sacred scenes, the Antiquarium, that displays the major remains unearthed during the excavation work carried out around the Roman Villa, and "Alfredo Baccarini" Archives.
Last but not least is the seventeenth-century Palazzo San Giacomo, that is situated two kilometres far from the city centre and rises along the right banks of the river Lamone. This sumptuous manor house, that is decorated with splendid frescoes depicting mythological and allegorical subjects, was commissioned by Counts Rasponi around the end of the XVI century. Its major peculiarity is the fact it gathers 365 windows..
