Visiting Rocca San Giovanni
Rocca San Giovanni is a small municipality of the province of Chieti. Its cosy old town, which was appointed one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, rises on the top of an impressive rock spur overlooking the fascinating Trabocchi Coast. Its municipal territory includes some of the most appreciated seaside resorts of Abruzzo's coast, such as those situated in the area of Cavalluccio and Vallevò.
Rocca San Giovanni gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities which are able to suit even the most demanding requirements of both cultural tourists and those interested in spending pleasant holidays at the seaside. They will have the opportunity to stay at both elegant hotels and small and welcoming family-run inns. Both the city centre and the sea front are scattered with plenty of comfortable guest houses belonging to different price categories, such as the intimate bed and breakfasts of the old town and the residences which punctuate the coastline. Furthermore, the surrounding hills are peppered with charming farmhouses.
After a whole day spent lying on the beach, tourists will have the possibility to visit the city's picturesque fourteenth-century village, which still retains its original medieval town layout. It is peppered with sumptuous buildings which were realized in the traditional Gothic Lombard style, such as the church of St. Matteo Apostolo, which was erected in 1076 but has subsequently been repeatedly remodelled all over the centuries. The church is flanked by the high Bell Tower, the only tower (out of the three original XIII-century ones) that still retains its original aspect. Not to be missed are the imposing remains of the medieval walls, which were built towards the end of the second half of the XI century and were subsequently renovated in the course of the fifteenth century.
