Visiting Riolo Terme
Riolo Terme, a small municipality of the province of Ravenna, is idyllically set just in the heart of the valley of the river Senio, and is surrounded by the lush green hills of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines. This cosy centre, that is especially famous for its hot springs, is situated few kilometres far from Via Aemilia, and develops halfway between Imola and Faenza.
The comfortable hotels of the old town and the elegant guest houses of Riolo's thermal park give tourists the possibility to admire the rich historical and architectural heritage of the city. The local farm houses, that are idyllically set in the heart of the glorious surrounding countryside and are surrounded by fascinating itineraries and footpaths, give guests the possibility to taste delicious local specialities from the surrounding area.
The city centre distributes around the majestic Sforza Fortress, that was erected in 1388 and then restored by Caterina Sforza in the XV century. This impressive military fortification, that has a quadrangular plan, boasts peculiar battlements and plenty of defensive architectural elements, such as machicolations and manoeuvre chambers. This huge architectural complex, which is now the seat of the Documentation Centre of the Chalk Path, plays a fundamental role in Riolo's cultural life, because it is often the venue for important national and European art exhibitions and events.
One of the city's major sacred buildings is the Abbey of St. Pietro in Sala, which was built in the IX century by the Benedictine Friars. It is still possible to visit the ancient crypt, the sail-shaped bell tower and the fifteenth-century bell.
Spas and hot springs are the major attractions of the city. In 1870, an important spa establishment was built here to exploit the local sulphur water and water containing sodium chloride, bromide and iodide. Surrounded by thick woods and a lush vegetation, the spa establishment is provided with modern facilities and equipment, and its modern pavilions are flanked by the original Art-nouveau structures.
500 metres far from the city centre is the modern Acqualand Park. Provided with a large swimming pool, exciting water chutes and comfortable Jacuzzi bathtubs, it is the ideal destination for those interested in spending pleasant summer holidays here.
