Reggiolo, a small municipality of the province of Reggio Emilia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the fertile plain that extends a short distance from the channel Cavo Fiuma and the river Po. It is situated 29 kilometres far from Reggio Emilia, and extends across the north-eastern part of the province, halfway between the fascinating Valleys of Novellara and Reggiolo.

Reggiolo's most representative religious building is the splendid Parish Church of St. Maria Assunta, that was erected between 1855 and 1858. Regarded to be the masterpiece of the famous architect Cesare Costa from Modena, it boasts a sumptuous facade that is decorated with six pilasters in the lower part and with a triangular gable in the upper part.
The majestic Reggiolo's Fortress is the most representative architectural landmark of the city. Built around the imposing medieval keep that was erected in 1242, it was complemented by four high side towers in the XIV century. Both the towers, the walls and numerous architectural elements belonging to the defensive system, such as the communication trenches and machicolations, can still be seen. Not to be missed is the eighteenth-century Palazzo Sartoretti, that commands the city's main square. Its interior hosts a marvellous hall, the so-called Salone dei Miti, that is embellished by sumptuous trompe-l’oeil three-dimensional decorations. The fortress is backed by the nineteenth-century Municipal Theatre, a splendid example of Neoclassical architecture provided with a semi-circular inner hall and three tiers of boxes.
