Together with Amalfi, the historic and cultural town of Ravello is the most important artistic centre of the Amalfi Coast. The Duomo of St. Pantaleone is the city's most important monument: built in 1086, it gained its current aspect in the XII century (and was then partially restored in the XVIII century), and is flanked by a high bell tower dating back to the same period. Its sober facade is embellished by a sumptuous gate by Barisano Da Trani, which is decorated with 54 briquettes and bears an inscription dated 1179. The interior cherishes the wonderful pulpit by Niccolò di Bartolomeo, which is supported by six marvellous stone lions. The pulpit was realized in 1272, and its rectangular marble structure is embellished by plenty of splendid decorations, columns, mosaics and friezes. The Duomo is also home to a precious medieval ambo, that was commissioned by Costantino Rogadeo in 1130.
Another church worthy of mention in Ravello is St. Giovanni del Toro, which was built in the XII century and subsequently restored in 1715, but still retains its original medieval aspect. Its interior hosts a Classical sarcophagus, a medieval pupil and precious frescoes and stuccoes. Ravello is also home to the ruins of Palazzo della Marra and the splendid complex of Villa Rufolo, the latter being built between the XIII and the XIV centuries according to Islamic architectural canons.
Ravello is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, such as those of Minori, Maiori, Atrani and Amalfi, that are situated few kilometres far from it. The impressive mountains that dominate the city are crossed by plenty of exciting naturalistic itineraries, what makes Ravello the ideal holiday destination for the lovers of nature and open-air activities.
