The Fortress of Radicofani boasts a long history which abounds in legendary events and glorious vicissitudes. This impressive fortress was firstly mentioned in a document dating back to 978. Its imposing structure, which is made up of an impressive central body surrounded by high towers and bulwarks, was strategically built along the ancient via Francigena. Designed to be the residence of important Popes and Emperors, in the late 1200 it was occupied by Ghino di Tacco. This lord, who came from a well-off family from Siena, was a legendary brigand who was known for robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. Regarded to be a kind of an Italian Robin Hood, his vicissitudes were told by acclaimed Tuscan writers, such as Dante and Boccaccio.
Despite being repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, the Fortress, which can be visited upon booking, still retains the ancient fascination which made it the centre of legendary vicissitudes and events.
Below the Fortress is Villa Medicea, which was commissioned by the noble Tuscan Medici Family in the late sixteenth century. One of the most representative sacred buildings of the surrounding area is the church of St. Peter the Apostle, a large Romanesque building which cherishes several artworks by Andrea della Robbia. The most important artist of ceramic glaze of the times, he also realized a wonderful dossal, which is now cherished by the church of St. Agata, the second largest and most important church in Radicofani.
The city's most appreciated event, which every year attracts large numbers of tourists and curious people, is the so-called “Piaceri d’estate” (Summer Pleasures) festival, which is livened up by exciting entertainment activities, shows and food and wine events, such as the street market gathering typical local staples which takes place in the first weekend of July.
