Visiting Pozzuoli
Pozzuoli is an appreciated tourist resort situated in the province of Naples. The area which surrounds Pozzuoli, which overlooks the homonymous gulf, is known as Phlegraean Fields, and is a wide caldera which comprises plenty of craters and volcanic edifices. Just behind Pozzuoli's old town is the famous Solfatara crater, a dormant volcano which still emits jets of steam with sulphurous fumes.
Pozzuoli is an enchanting holiday destination where nature, history and art merge in pleasant harmony. During summer, the hotels which overlook the sea provide hospitality to large numbers of families and the lovers of seaside holidays. Pozzuoli also gathers comfortable guesthouses belonging to any category, as well as intimate bed and breakfasts, cheap inns and welcoming residences which are situated along the sea front or in the heart of the old town.
An important commercial harbour during the Roman Age, Pozzuoli's original settlement, the so-called Rione Terra, was embellished by impressive buildings and majestic architectures. Because of bradyseism, which is the gradual uplift or descent of part of the Earth's surface caused by the filling or emptying of an underground magma chamber or hydrothermal activity, these territories were repeatedly abandoned and then populated again. Today Rione Terra is undergoing great renovation works and tourists can only visit the city's surface and a small underground section, which is approached through dedicated paths. The visit of Pozzuoli's ancient settlement gives tourists the possibility to admire two Roman amphitheatres, the Temple of Serapide or Macellum, the ancient public market which once overlooked the majestic Roman harbour, the stadium and further important evidences which contribute to make Pozzuoli one of the most important archaeological centres in Italy. Another important sight is the sanctuary of St. Gennaro, an imposing basilica which was erected in the place where the Saint was martyred in the VI century AD and was subsequently reconstructed in the following centuries.
Excursionists won't miss the opportunity to visit the naturalistic oasis of Monte Nuovo, a dormant volcano which originated in 1538 after a sudden eruption. This small peak is covered with a thick vegetation and carpeted with the typical Mediterranean scrub. A fascinating path leads to the crater and a wonderful lookout point overlooking the enchanting Gulf of Pozzuoli.
