Portomaggiore, a small municipality of the province of Ferrara, is situated just in the heart of the ancient Estense waterway system, and develops a short distance from the Park of the Po Delta and the Marshes of Comacchio. One of the most representative examples of Renaissance architecture is the so-called Delizia del Verginese, that is situated few kilometres far from the lovely hamlet of Gambulaga. This sumptuous manor house, that was erected around 1481, was subsequently turned into a wonderful castle. Encircled by a lush garden and surrounded by four square-shaped side towers, it is dominated by an elegant portal framed with rusticated ashlars.  
The lovers of nature won't miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting reserve of Anse vallive di Porto-Bacino di Bando and the Oasis of  Porto-Trava. This enchanting naturalstic areas, that provide the ideal habitat for rare species of animals and birds, are peppered with long cycle paths, important birdwatching stations and large sport fishing areas.
