Visiting Poppi
Poppi's medieval village is idyllically set just in the heart of Casentino, an enchanting Tuscan valley situated halfway between Arezzo and Florence which has recently been appointed National Park.
A city of great historical and artistic value, it is included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Its artistic beauties and outstanding natural landscapes attract large numbers of tourists. The comfortable hotels of the old town are situated a short distance from the city's major monuments and places of interest. Charming guesthouses and holiday fams, which are hosted inside ancient manors, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in discovering Casentino's natural beauties.
Poppi's ancient walls cherish inestimable architectural and artistic beauties. Note the Castle of Counts Guidi, which gazes across the city centre and Casentino valley from on high. Although it is said to have been built in the X century, it still retains its original patterns and stands out as Casentino's most representative monument. Its interior cherishes the Rilliana Library, which contains important medieval manuscripts. Not to be missed is the Chapel of the Counts, whose walls were frescoed in the fourteenth century by Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto.
Another sight worthy of note is Propositura dei Santi Marco e Lorenzo, a sumptuous church which was built in 1284 and subsequently remodelled in the XVIII century. Its interior is embellished by spledid sixteenth-century altar pieces by Ligozzi and Morandini, the latter being an acclaimed local painter called Poppi. In front of the church is Piazza Amerighi, Poppi's major square, which is dominated by the oratory of Madonna del Morbo, a sumptuous building which was realized in the Baroque style from Tuscany; its interior cherishes a famous Madonna and Child by Filippino Lippi.
Even the nearby XI-century church of St. Fedele contains artistic masterpieces of great value. Among these, a famous crucifix by Giotto and some paintings by Ligozzi.
Walking around the impressive city walls, tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views over Tuscany's glorious countryside.
A short distance from Poppi is Camaldoli, a traditional tourist mecca for thousands of pilgrims flocking to its ancient retreat and monastery.
