Ponteranica is a small Lombard municipality situated only 4 kilometres far from Bergamo's city centre. During the Middle Ages, the Guelph village of Ponteranica was obliged to build numerous fortifications in order to protect against the Ghibelline attack. Among these is the imposing Castle of Moretta, a large architectural complex which once gathered a castle and impressive towers and bulwarks, whose remains gaze across Ponteranica's city centre from on high. A short distance from it is the fifteenth-century church of St. Rocco, whose interior cherishes the remains of some precious medieval frescos.
Even Ponteranica's most representative sacred building, the church of St. Alessandro and St. Vincenzo, which is characterized by a sober facade featuring stone decorations and stained-glass windows, dates back to the XV century. Its interior cherishes artistic masterpieces of great value, such as the Polyptych by Lorenzo Lotto, which is one of the most appreciated artworks realized by this acclaimed Venetian painter who lived between ‘400 and ‘500.
Not to be missed is the nearby village of Rosciano, which is home to a small XV-century church which contains precious frescos and works of art.
