The small municipality of Pontenure extends across the north-western part of the province of Piacenza. Situated halfway between the streams Nure and Riglio, it is wholly crossed by the ancient Via Aemilia. Its name derives from the bridge situated over the homonymous stream, that connects this ancient centre with the city of Piacenza.

Apart from cherishing a beautiful church with Greek-cross plan, this imposing fortified complex also includes a square-shaped tower and an imposing keep, that was erected in the moat outside the  “castrum”. Not to be missed are the fascinating palaces, buildings and gardens of Villa Raggio, that was commissioned by the homonymous family around 1800, and the Neoclassical Villa Bellotta in Valconasso, that was erected between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, and was then widely restored in 1914-15 according to the canons of the Venetian style. Every year during the second September Sunday, the popular Donkey Festival is held here, and always attracts thousands of visitors. This amazing event culminates with a peculiar donkey parade and the tasting of the special stracotto.
