Pompei disappeared in one single day under a six-metre-thick layerof volcanic ash. The first excavations were carried out at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Starting from 1748, Charles of Bourbon commissioned the execution of systematic excavation works, and by the end of the XVIII century streets, theatres, houses and great palaces were unearthed under the surface of the coasts of the Gulf of Naples.
