Policoro is a small municipality situated just in the heart of Metaponto's plain, in the remote and wild region of Basilicata, and is the second most important cultural and economic centre in the province of Matera. The eastern side of Policoro, Lido di Policoro, overlooks the Ionian Sea, while its city centre cherishes the ruins of the ancient city of Heraclea, which was an important centre of Magna Graecia.

Policoro gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities. Modern hotels concentrate along the sea front, which is a rapidly expanding area because of the increasing number of tourists who flock here year after year. The National Archaeological Museum of Siritide, which is situated just in the heart of Heraclea's archeological area, gathers precious remains which date back to different historical periods, from the Neolithic up to the Roman Age. A short distance from the museum are the Sanctuary of Demeter and the VII-century Archaic Temple dedicated to Dionysus, which bear witness to the great importance this centre had at the time of Magna Graecia.
Another popular attraction for the lovers of science and nature is the Oasis of Bosco Pantano, a WWF protected area which cherishes the remains of an ancient wood which was celebrated by many writers as an enchanted forest and which is a rare example of an hygrophilus forest which once covered the whole Ionian Coast.
