Visiting Pignone

Pignone, a small municipality of the province of La Spezia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the upper valley of the river Vara, and is surrounded by lush green hills dotted with thick woods and ancient vines. This charming hilly centre, that is situated 15 kilometres far from the provincial capital, is part of Montemarcello-Magra Regional Natural Park, and is characterized by the presence of small picturesque villages that punctuate the valleys of the rivers Pignone and Casale.

The comfortable hotels of the old town and Pignone's family-run guest houses make the ideal base for discovering the city's major artistic and architectural beauties, as well as for reaching the wonderful coastline and Ligurian hinterland. The local farm houses, that distribute across the lush hills of Cinque Terre Natural Park, give guests the possibility to taste delicious local staples from the surrounding area, as well as to undertake pleasant excursions across the beautiful Val di Vara.

The sixteenth-century Ponte Vecchio, that features stone base and segmental arch, leads visitors to the centre of the village. In the middle of the bridge is a niche that contains a statue of the Virgin surmounted by a Maestà that was largely made of white marble. Porta Maestra, the only medieval gate that can still be seen today, leads to the old town. It is surmounted by a stone medieval loggia surmounted by a slate roofing that was totally rebuilt in 1600.
Piazza Marconi is dominated by the Parish Church of St. Maria Assunta, that was erected in 1339 and then totally remodelled over the course of the eighteenth century. This sumptuous Romanesque building has a nave and two aisles, and contains interesting frescoes dating back to the XVIII and XIX century. The Sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio, that was built in 1640, is situated two kilometres far from the municipal capital, along the course of the stream  Pignone. The church, that is embellished by a beautiful porch, is also known as Madonna del Ponte, since it was erected a short distance from the XVI-century Aqueduct Bridge.
The so-called Castellaro, a famous Site of Communitarian Importance (S.I.C.) gathering precious archaeological sites dating back to the Bronze and Iron Age, rises on the top of a sweet nearby hill.
