Visiting Pietralunga

Pietralunga, a small municipality of northern Umbria, is idyllically set on the top of a gentle hill which overlooks the so-called Upper Valley of the River Timber, which develops on the slopes of the first reliefs of the Umbria-Marche Apennines. The city, which was dubbed “Tufi” from the Umbrian population and “Forum Julii Concupiensium” by the Romans, is scattered with precious archaeological finds dating back to different historical periods, even if the old town now retains the aspect it achived during the Middle Ages.

Those interested in spending pleasant holidays based on total tranquillity in Pietralunga will have the possibility to choose among a dazzling array of hotels and accommodation options. The local guest houses and bed and breakfasts will be able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements. Those interested in tasting traditional local staples from the surrounding area should stay at Pietralunga's charming farm houses, which give them the possibility to make exciting excursions across the nearby hills and to eat tasty traditional specialities from Umbria.

Pietralunga's old town is scattered with outstanding monuments and buildings of ancient origin. The city's most representative monument is the VIII-century Parish Church of St. Maria, whose orientation was changed in the XIX century. The area which was once occupied by the apse now hosts the entrance gate, while the rear still retains the Romanesque rose window and portal. Not to be missed are the Parish Church de’ Saddi, which cherishes the mortal remains of St. Crescenziano and precious XV-century frescos, and the XIII-century former monastery of St. Agostino, which was once the seat of the public school.
The principal square is dominated by the remains of the ancient VIII-century Lombard Fortress, which has pentagonal plan; it is situated a short distance from the ancient village, which is crossed by fascinating narrow streets and commanded by outstanding medieval and Renaissance buildings. Pietralunga is livened up by a wide range of amazing events, such as the food and wine festivals dedicated to the traditional local staples, like the Festival of Truffle and Potatoes in October, and interesting cultural events, like the popular Palio of Mannaja which takes place in August. It is an outstanding historical recollection which celebrates a miracle that occurred in the XIV century during which local inhabitants compete in the popular “biroccio” race.
