Visiting Panicale
The small medieval village of Panicale is situated on the top of a sweet hill which rises south of Lake Trasimeno, in the westernmost edge of Umbria. The picturesque old town of this thriving resort, which once played a fundamental role as an outpost of Perugia, has recently been included in the prestigious list of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and was also awarded the Orange Flag recognition by Touring Club for its enchanting landscapes and excellent tourist services.
Panicale gathers a remarkably wide array of hotels, which give both the lovers of art and nature the possibility to spend pleasant holidays based on the utmost relax. The local guest houses and small family-run inns give guests the possibility to eat tasty traditional specialities from the surrounding territory. The lovers of sport and nature will have the possibility to stay at one of the charming farm houses which punctuate Panicale's glorious countryside.
Panicale's picturesque old town, a splendid example of medieval architecture, boasts breathtaking views over Lake Trasimeno and the underlying valley of the river Nestore, and gathers plenty of sumptuous historical buildings of great artistic and cultural value. Not to be missed are the Church of St. Michele Arcangelo, which was erected in the XI century and contains precious artworks from the Umbrian School, the seventeenth-century Church of Madonna della Sbarra and the Church of St. Agostino, which has hosted the Museum of Tulle since 2001. The pride of the city is the Small Church of St. Sebastiano, which is situated outside the city walls. It contains precious artworks by Perugino, such as the famous “Martyrdome of Saint Sebastian” (1505). Walking down the streets of the old town, tourists will have the possibility to reach the lovely Cesare Caporali Theatre, which was built in the XVII century and was subsequently enlarged by Giovanni Caproni in the nineteenth century.
Panicale often arranges amazing festivals and food fairs, such as the Grape Festival in September, during which the five districts of the city compete in an amazing float parade, the Ear Festival, which takes place in September, and the Chestnut Festival, which is held here between October and November.
