Visiting Paciano
The small municipality of Paciano is situated south of Lake Trasimeno, just upon the boundary with Tuscany. The enchanting old town of this picturesque resort has recently been included in the prestigious list of the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy. Situated on the top of the 391-metre-high Mount Petrarvella, Paciano dominates the area which was once occupied by the Roman Temple of Giano, and boasts sweeping views over the sweet hills of the surrounding area.
Paciano is the ideal destination for those interested in spending pleasant holidays based on culture and tasty food and wine specialities, since it abounds in comfortable hotels belonging to every category. Those interested in admiring the enchanting naturalistic beauties of the surrounding area will have the opportunity to stay at one of the city's charming farm houses or intimate bed and breakfasts. The local residences are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost privacy and freedom.
The city's old town still retains the original aspect of an ancient fortress, since it is surrounded by imposing fourteenth-century walls and eight towers, and it is accessible from three gates: Fiorentina, Perugina and Porta Rastrella. The impressive outer walls cherish the thirteenth-century Palazzo Comunale and the Church of St. Carlo Borromeo, which contains a precious seventeenth-century wood crucifix. A short distance from the walls are the Church of St. Concezione and St. Giuseppe and the Confraternity of St. Sacramento, the latter cherishing precious artworks from the Umbrian School. Not to be missed is the Parish Museum or Picture Gallery, which displays a rich collection of outstanding artworks of great historic-artistic value, such as Etruscan finds dating back to the VI century B.C., fourteenth-century frescoes and precious XVIII-century masterpieces by the painter Castelletti.
Outside the walls, not to be missed are the Church of Madonna della Stella, which was frescoed by Scilla Pecennini, the Church of St. Salvatore in Ceraseto and Mount Pausillo. Paciano often arranges amazing events and food festivals, such as the Oil Festival, which takes place at the beginning of December, and the so-called Paciano a Tavola Festival, which is held during the first September week and gives visitors the possibility to have lunch along the streets of the ancient village.
