Visiting Osio Sotto
Osio Sotto is a small municipality situated only 11 kilometres far from Bergamo, just in the heart of the provincial capital's central plain. The city centre of Osio Sotto develops along the eastern bank of the river Brembo and is bounded on the north by the nearby municipality of Osio Sopra, whose history is deeply interwoven with that of Osio Sotto.
The medieval village of Osio Sotto, the picturesque hamlets of the surrounding area and the glorious countryside which encircle the most important resorts welcome those interested in spending some days in Osio Sotto. Hotels and guesthouses are distributed along the most important avenues of the old town and so are intimate bed and breakfasts, while the glorious surrounding countryside is dotted with charming holiday farms which are hosted inside fascinating manor houses.
Among the old town's major attractions are the church of St. Zenone, which was erected in the XII century but was subsequently remodelled in the Baroque style over the course of the eigtheenth century, the nearby church of Addolorata and the church of St. Donato, which was built between the XIV and the XV century.
The nearby resort of Levate, which is idyllically set just in the heart of the flat surrounding landscape, hosts the beautiful church of St. Giorgio, which was built in the fourteenth century.
Not to be missed are the local cycle path and lush green area, the so-called bosco dell’Itala (Itala Wood), which provides a rich habitat for the traditional flora and fauna of the local plain. The lovers of excursions won't miss the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary of Madonna della Scopa, an impressive sacred building dating back to the XV century whose inner walls are embellished by sumptuous paintings and decorations.
