Visiting Osimo

Osimo is a small municipality which is situated in the province of Ancona. Surrounded by sweet rolling hills, it extends just behind the Conero Peninsula. Osimo's city centre is split into two parts by two adjoining hills. Situated on the top of the sweet surrounding reliefs, Osimo was a strategic outpost for the whole Piceno area, as evidenced by the numerous finds and remains which still punctuate the oldest part of its territory.

Those interested in spending some days in Osimo will have the possibility to stay at the comfortable hotels of the old town, the charming guest houses which overlook the nearby hills or the fascinating farm houses which are idyllically set just in the heart of lush landscapes and outstanding natural settings.

Tourists will have the possibility to explore plenty of exciting artistic itineraries, and to take part in interesting cultural excursions. Not to be missed is the visit of Osimo's caves, an outstanding tour across a real underground city and its mysteries and fascinating legends. The reasons of the existence of a thick network of underground galleries is still debated: some are said to have been created for defensive purposes, others to connect water tanks with each other, others to be turned into proper dwellings. The most mysterious spaces are some circular underground galleries which were probably used for religious purposes. Their rocks are decorated with plenty of bas reliefs depicting sacred scenes, such as the Caves of Cantinone, or with specific symbols belonging to the Knights Templar or the Knights Hospitaller, such as the Caves Simonetti. The foundations of Palazzo Campana are crossed by two narrow tunnels which are decorated with allegorical bas reliefs depicting esoteric scenes.
Osimo's old town hosts sumptuous palaces and manor houses, the city's Basilica, which boasts an enchanting XIII-century facade, and the Church of St. Marco, whose Baroque interior cherishes a wonderful altar piece by Guercino. Some of the city's most ancient monuments are the so-called Fonte Magna, a beautiful fountain which was realized between the I century B.C and the I century A.D., the remains of impressive Roman walls, Porta San Giacomo, and the ancient Cathedral of St. Leopoldo, Osimo's Romanesque-Gothic Duomo .
