The itinerary that revolves around Sacro Monte includes thirty-six chapels and a huge monastery. The sanctuary of Sacro Monte, that was constructed between 1591 and 1760, gathers 376 statues. The whole complex is a protected naturalistic and environmental area.
Tourists flocking to Orta San Giulio will have the possibility to undertake pleasant boat rides to the splendid island of San Giulio. It gathers sumptuous villas and stately homes, a former seminary and the beautiful Basilica of St. Giulio. One of the most precious Romanesque buildings in Italy, it was built between the V and the XII century. Its interior is embellished by prestigious medieval and Baroque frescoes of great value. Not to be missed is the precious black Oira marble ambo, that was built between 1110 and 1120. This outstanding sculpture is embellished by beautiful lunettes bearing mysterious symbols and inscriptions.
