Visiting Nola
Nola is the largest and most important city of the area that connects Naples with Avellino. Situated on the northern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the city gives its name to the whole Campanian Area of the so-called Agro Nolano. It abounds in history and traditions, and was repeatedly proposed as a new provincial capital. Nola was the native town of illustrious Italian personalities, such as Giordano Bruno and Paolino di Nola, and the city where the first Roman Emperor, Octavius Augustus, died. Nola's greatest traditions are mirrored by the fascinating Festa dei Gigli (Lily Festival), which takes place here every June.
Hotels in Nola give both tourists and business travellers the possibility to take advantage of modern comforts and high-quality services and facilities. The local guest houses welcome guests with the utmost warmth and hospitality, and give them the possibility to enjoy clean spaces and excellent services. Nola's farm houses give guests the possibility to experience a closer touch with nature while discovering ancient rural traditions and tasting excellent food and wine specialities from the surrounding area.
Nola's well-kept old town is a fascinating place gathering plenty of outstanding monuments of great value. The city's most representative sacred building is the late Renaissance Church of St. Biagio, which is now the seat of a Friars Minor Community dating back to 1300. Not to be missed are the Church of St. Maria Jacobi and the Duomo, which was rebuilt in 1900 after a great fire.
One of Nola's most interesting cultural attractions is the so-called “Pompei della Preistoria” (Prehistoric Pompei), which is cherished by the local Archaeological Museum. It includes two well-preserved prehistoric huts which were unearthed under thick layers of ash and mud.
Nola is famous all over the world for the legendary Festa dei Gigli (Lily Festival), which takes place every year in June to celebrate St. Paolino da Nola, who was the bishop of the city in the V century. The city's squares are crowded with large numbers of people who flock here to admire nine incredible votive lilies which are realized during the year by the city's congregations: il Sarto, il Fabbro, il Calzolaio, il Beccaio, la Barca, il Panettiere, il Bettoliere, il Salumiere e l’Ortolano. The lilies are higher than four- or five-storey buildings. Then the bust of St. Paolino is carried away from the Duomo and the so-called Paranze (the teams that bear the Lilies) make the giant statues dance to the beat of the music. This is the unforgettable moment of the Ballad of the Lilies.
