Visiting Neviano
Neviano, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, develops along the central-western side of Salento, on the slopes of the so-called “Serre” sweet hills. Its old town is situated 13 kilometres far from the Ionian Sea; it dominates the modern city centre, which over the last few years has developed just in the heart of the flat underlying territory.
Those interested in admiring Neviano's historical and artistic beauties will have the possibility to stay at the comfortable hotels of the old town, the charming guest houses which rise on the top of the sweet hills that overlook the modern city centre, or the welcoming farm houses which are situated just in the heart of Neviano's glorious countryside.
The old town is dominated by the Church dedicated to St. Michele Arcangelo, which was erected in the second half of 1800. It boasts a sober Neoclassical facade featuring four columns embellished by elegant Corinthian capitals, which support the architrave and tympan of its only portal.
The Abbey of St. Nicola di Macugno, which stands 3 kilometres far from the city centre, dates back to 1378. This complex, which bears witness to the previous existence of the ancient Macugno's manor house, boasts a fortified tower featuring two frescoed side niches and some huge caves which were dug into the rock.
The numerous stone buildings which punctuate the surrounding territory are included in the so-called “Stone Landscape”, which gathers almost 140 kilometres of dry-stone walls and over 430 cone-shaped rural complexes featuring circular or quadrangular plan (the so-called furnieddhi.)
The city's most representative military structure is the Castle of Neviano, which was erected in the first half of the XV century. In the seventeenth century, the building, which was crowned by a huge cornice supported by impressive brackets, underwent extensive restoration works, but it still retains the typical defensive patterns of ancient fortifications. At Christmas, a fascinating Living Crib is arranged inside the castle, and it attracts large numbers of both tourists and curious people.
