Visiting Narḍ
Nardò, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, lies just in the heart of a large plain which develops 7 kilometres far from the Ioanian coastline. Idyllically set in a flourishing area of great historical and naturalistic interest, it includes plenty of small hamlets which develop along the local 20-km-long coastline.
The Ioanian coastline is scattered with a remarkably wide array of accommodation options. The local hotels give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices, while the best guest houses give them the possibility to reach the major monuments in a very short time. Nardò's farm houses and bed and breakfasts give guests the possibility to enjoy the utmost intimacy and comfort at reduced rates.
The old town is dominated by the Basilica of St. Maria Assunta, which was erected in 1879. This imposing Romanesque-Baroque building is subdivided into a nave and two aisles which are embellished by sumptuous Romanesque and Gothic arches. Its interior cherishes splendid fourteenth-century frescoes and a peculiar XIII-century wood Crucifix, the so-called Black Christ.
The octagonal "Osanna" Shrine, which was largely made of local stone from Lecce, was built iin 1603 according to the typical architectural patterns of the Oriental style. The central column, which supports the dome of the small temple, is surrounded by eight further columns.
The city's oldest civic building is the so-called Sedile, which was built in the second half of the XV century. In the XVII century, the Rococo decorations of the upper part complemented the original Renaissance structure and its impressive rounded arches. Not to be missed is the famous Acquaviva Castle, which was commissioned by Giovanni Antonio Acquaviva of Aragona in the XV century. This imposing quadrangular building is dominated by four almond-shaped towers which are surmounted by elegant cornices and brackets. This fortress, which was repeatedly remodelled, was then turned into a sumptuous stately home between the late XIX century and the early XX century. Today, it is the seat of the local authorities.
Nardò's varied territory gives visitors the possibility to explore enchanting landscapes of rare beauty, such as Parco di Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano, the city's egional park which was established in 2006.
