Visiting Mosciano Sant'Angelo

Mosciano Sant’Angelo is a small municipality (9000 inhabitants) of the province of Teramo. It is situated in the northern side of Abruzzo, a short distance from the major seaside resorts and the natural reserve of Monti della Laga. Mosciano Sant’Angelo is surrounded by fascinating fortified villages, such as Civitella del Tronto and Montone.

Those interested in visiting the major beauties of the surrounding area will have the possibility to stay at the local guest houses, which are situated on the top of sweet panoramic hills which boast breathtaking views over both the sea and the mountains. Hotels in Mosciano Sant’Angelo are situated just in the heart of the glorious surrounding countryside, just few kilometres far from the local beaches and mountains. Mosciano's local authorities strive to promote an extraordinary food and wine tour across its lands, restaurants and farm houses.

Mosciano developed around the ancient Benedictine monastery and the church of St. Angelo, the latter dating back to the XI century. The original village developed around  the monastery of Santissimi Sette Fratelli, and then transformed into a fortified stronghold before turning into the charming citadel that is today. Walking down the streets of the old town, it is possible to detect some evidences of the substantial development experienced by the city. One of Mosciano's most interesting itineraries is the so-called “Mosciano Turrita”, which leads visitors into discovery of the highest medieval towers of the city. Not to be missed are Mosciano's churches: the above mentioned monastery, the church of St. Michele Arcangelo and the church of St. Rosario. Mosciano is also home to an important centre for scientific research, the Astronomical Observatory of Monte Leone.
A short distance from Mosciano Sant’Angelo is Montone, a fortified stronghold which still retains well-preserved medieval towers and imposing city walls. Montone, which is situated in a privileged panoramic position overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is famous all over the world for its famous Bucciarello funerary sarcophagus, which was realized by Jacopo di Bartolomeo in 1390 and is cherished by the Church of St. Antonio Abate.
