In the early Middle Ages, the small municipality of Mordano was the seat of fierce fighting between the powerful cities of Bologna and Imola. Subsequently controlled by Milan, Faenza and Venice, it is now part of the province of Bologna and is situated only 11 km far from Imola.

Mordano's city centre is dominated by two impressive towers, which were built in the 80s according to the project by the engineer Giovanni Brusi, who draw inspiration from Venice's Arsenal. Not to be missed is the Parish Church of St. Eustachio, whose interior cherishes a small shrine dedicated to Dead Christ and a sixteenth-century marble holy-water stoup. The high altar is decorated with precious XVI-century frescoes depicting the Madonna and Child. The Monastery of St.  Francesco is worthy of mention too. The current building is situated over the remains of a pre-existing structure which was built by the Benedictine Friars before the year 1000.
