Visiting Montichiari
Montichiari is one of the most important municipalities in the province of Brescia, and is situated 20 kilometres far from the provincial capital. Its territory extends just in the heart of the high Bergamo plain and is crossed by the river Chiese.
An appreciated cultural destination, Montichiari boasts an outstanding artistic and monumental heritage, genuine traditions and absorbing cultural events which attract large numbers of young people, artists and visitors from all over the world.
Montichiari gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation facilities; the comfortable hotels and guesthouses situated in the old town make the ideal base for visiting the city's major attractions and highlights. Not to be missed are intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms, which are idyllically set just in the heart of Brescia's glorious countryside, a short distance from the main footpaths and naturalistic itineraries.
This city experienced glorious historical vicissitudes, as evidenced by the outstanding monuments and Roman finds which are now hosted inside the local archaeological museum. Montichiari's most representative sacred building is the Parish Church of St. Pancrazio, which is the oldest church in the city. It was erected on the top of the homonymous hill in the VI century, but was subsequently remodelled in the XIV century and the following period. San Pancrazio's Hill also hosts Castle Bonoris, which was built in the late nineteenth century over the remains of a pre-existing medieval fortress. The large park which surrounds the castle belongs to the local municipality and can be accessed through the central Piazza Santa Maria. One side of this square, which is the city's major gathering place and the venue for absorbing shows and cultural events, is dominated by the impressive profile of the eighteenth-century Duomo, whose interior cherishes the relics of Saint Pancrazio, an altar-piece by Romanino and further precious sculptures.
Among the city's most representative sacred and civic buildings are the seventeenth-century church of St. Maria del Suffragio, the Palace of the Monti Barons, Palazzo Pilati and the church of St. Pietro. Worthy of mention are the recently renovated Bonoris Theatre and Nuova City contemporary complex, which gathers offices, banks, modern flats and stylish shops.
Over the last decades, some important public facilities have been built in order to foster local tourism. Among these, not to be missed are Gabriele D’Annunzio Airport, a former military building which is now an important stopover boosting local tourist activities, Garda's Exhibition Centre, the second largest fair district in Lombardy after that of Milan, and the only indoor velodrome in Italy, which hosts challenging cycling competitions all year round.
