Visiting Monteroni Di Lecce

Monteroni di Lecce, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, is located just in the heart of the large karst plain of Cupa Valley. It extends halfway between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, the latter being situated 20 kilometres far from it. Together with 25 further municipalities, it is part of the social, economic and cultural Park of Negramaro, which is aimed at promoting the whole surrounding territory.

Monteroni's welcoming hotels give guests the possibility to vist the major artistic beauties of both the city itself and the nearby provincial capital. The local guest houses, which are provided with large conference rooms and state-of-the-art services and facilities, are the ideal accommodation facilities for business travellers. Monteroni's farm houses, which are surrounded by the lush vegetation of the glorious countryside, give guests the possibility to eat tasty traditional specialities and robust rural dishes.

The city's most representative landmark is its Chiesa Matrice (that is dedicated to the Assunta), which was erected in the XIV century and then subsequently remodelled several times. This imposing building, which has a Latin cross layout, boasts a sumptuous Baroque facade; its interior contains four seventeenth-century altars which were largely built of local stone from Lecce.
Not to be missed is the impressive Palazzo Baronale, which is one of the largest manor houses in the province of Lecce. Built as a small fortress at the end of the XV century by the Montoroni family, it was then turned into a stately home. It boasts a great portal featuring four columns bearing elegant Corinthian capitals and friezes. The whole complex was built according to the typical architectural patterns of the Baroque style from Lecce.
Both Monteroni's countryside and the whole territory of Cupa Valley are scattered with elegant manor houses and sumptuous stately  homes, which were built here starting from the XV century. Not to be missed are the monumental Villa Cirulli, which was erected in 1704 and still retains a small chapel and a lush garden dominated by the so-called "dolphins fountain", and the Neoclassical Villa Pasca, whose single floor is flanked by an ancient farm dating back to 1822.
