Visiting Montefranco
Montefranco, a small municipality of the province of Terni, develops amidst the thick woods and lush olive groves of the enchanting Valley of the River Nera. Its picturesque city centre distributes on the top of the charming 414-metre-high Bufone Hill.
Montefranco's old town is scattered with comfortable accommodation facilities that give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here based on the utmost rest and relax. Montefranco also gathers charming guest houses belonging to every price category and intimate farm houses, the latter giving guests the possibility to taste traditional specialities from the surrounding area.
Montefranco's beautiful village, that was founded in the Middle Ages next to Bufone Castle, still retains impressive remains of the ancient walls, as well as two imposing entrance doors to the castle: Porta Franca and Porta Spoletina.
The most representative monument of the old town is the ancient Church of St. Maria Assunta, that was built in the Middle Ages according to the architectural canons of Orvieto's Cathedral.
Montefranco is situated within a short driving distance from further important tourist centres of Umbria, such as the spectacular Marmore waterfalls, Terni's old town and the nearby banks of Lake Piediluco. Not to be missed is Villa Franchetti, that stands just in the heart of the road that connects the lake with the so-called Forca dell'Arrone. Surrounded by a lush park gathering 30 spectacular orchid species, it contains a splendid collection of sculptures, ceramics, etchings, lithographies and screen printings of great artistic value.
