The city's most representative landmark is the Castle of Montechiarugolo, that was built at the beginning of the XIII century. The fortress, that was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, still retains its original late-medieval architectural structure, and it is dominated by a high square-shaped tower and surrounded by imposing merloned walls. Another building worthy of mention is the Civic Palace, that was erected over the remains of a pre-existing XV-century structure and has recently been heavily remodelled. It still retains a beautiful sixteenth-century portico overlooking the inner courtyard, while the great halls of the ground floor are often the venue for important temporary exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
The enchanting 25-hectare-large park of the small hamlet of Monticelli is home to the renowned Monticelli Spas. This innovative thermal complex, that was inaugurated in the 20s, gives patients the possibility to take advantage of the beneficial properties carried out by both sulphur water and water containing sodium chloride, bromide and iodide.
