Visiting Montecchio Emilia
Montecchio Emilia, a small municipality of the province of Reggio Emilia, is idyllically set just in the heart of the homonymous valley that marks the watershed between the provinces of Parma and Reggio Emilia. Situated 15 kilometres far from the provincial capital, it develops along the right banks of the river Enza.
Those interested in visiting Montecchio Emilia and its major attractions will have the possibility to stay at the city's welcoming hotels and guest houses, that belong to any price category. The lovers of nature and open-air activities won't miss the opportunity to stay at the charming farm houses and intimate bed and breakfasts of the surrounding area.
The imposing defensive walls of the ancient medieval core, the so-called “citadel”, cherish the seventeenth-century Chiesa Nuova or Madonna del Popolo. This sumptuous building boasts a Latin-cross plan, and its facade is crowned by a triangular pediment. The city's oldest religious building is the Church of St. Donnino Martire, that was erected around the end of the sixteenth century over the remains of a pre-existing IX-X-century oratory. Its interior cherishes a prestigious altar piece depicting Saint Donnino (1720), a beautiful XII-century font, and some splendid nineteenth-century carved wooden choir stalls.
Montecchio's most representative landmark is the Fortress of the Castle, that was erected around the XI century. Although it lost part of its medieval aspect, it still retains its communication trenches, that are scattered with machicolations and embellished by Ghibeline merlons, the so-called Rocchetta small tower, which dates back to the XIII century, and an imposing 35-metre-high keep crowned by a beautiful eighteenth-century clock.
The small hamlet of Villa Aiola, that develops 2 kilometres far from the city centre, is home to a precious eighteenth-century wooden house that has recently been turned into the interesting Museum of Parmigiano Reggiano and Val d’Enza's peasant society.
