Visiting Monte Sant'Angelo

Monte Sant’Angelo, a lovely centre of the province of Foggia, is the highest village of Gargano Promontory. It rises at the height of 800 metres above sea level, and develops just in the heart of Gargano National Park. It overlooks the lush Tavoliere delle Puglie on one side and Manfredonia Gulf on the other, and is the most famous St. Michael worship site in Western Europe.

Their elegant layout and privileged position make hotels in Monte Sant’Angelo the ideal accommodation facilities for tourists and pilgrims flocking to the Sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel. The local guest houses, that are surrounded by the lush vegetation of the thick Foresta Umbra, boast breathtaking views over the enchanting bay of Manfredonia. Monte Sant'Angelo's farm houses, that distribute few kilometres far from the most important spiritual centres of Gargano Peninsula, give guests the possibility to undertake pleasant excursions across the glorious surrounding countryside, as well as to taste excellent local staples and gastro delights.

The city's most important historical, cultural and religious site is the Sanctuary of St. Michael the Archangel, that was commissioned by Charles I of Anjou in the XIII century. It develops on two levels. The upper floor boasts a beautiful Romanesque portal and a majestic octogonal bell tower. The lower floor, that is introduced by a long Angioin staircase, is embellished by a splendid Romanesque portal with bronze knockers depicting scenes from the Old and the New Testament and the famous cave of the apparition of the Saint (1076).
The Basilica of St. Michael is flanked by the monumental complex of St. Pietro. It gathers the homonymous church, that boasts a seventeenth-century rose window and a semidome apse, the Baptistry of St. Giovanni in Tumba, also known as Rotari Tomb, that was realized in the XII century and is embellished by the precious bas-reliefs of the entrance gate, and the beautiful Romanesque-Apulian Church of St. Maria Maggiore, that is decorated with splendid Byzantine frescoes.
The city's most important military building is the Castle of Sant'Angelo, that was erected between 837 and 838. The fortress, that was repeatedly remodelled during the Roman, Norman and Swabian periods, still retains the so-called "Giant" imposing pentagonal tower and an elegant thirteenth-century hall, the Treasure Hall, that was commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia and is characterized by a huge central pier and imposing ogival vaults.
