Visiting Monselice
Monselice is a small municipality situated few kilometres south of Padua. Its old town extends on the top of a gentle hill which rises just upon the merging of important communication routes and waterways. The numerous peoples who ruled these lands, such as Byzantines and Venetians, left indelible marks over the local history and art and made the city a privileged holiday destination for the lovers of culture.
Monselice gathers a remarkably wide array of guesthouses belonging to any price category. It also hosts comfortable hotels situated in the old town, intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms which stand a short distance from the city centre.
Monselice's most representative landmark is its Castle, an impressive architectural complex dating back to the early Middle Ages which comprises four separate bodies. The inner rooms now host a rich collection of memorabilia which bear witness to the long history of the city, as well as the remains which were unearthed in the so-called Rocca Hill and the ancient furnishings which embellished the castle at the time it was the residence of the noble Marcello Family from Venice. Even some sections of walls which once protected the urban settlement and the Civic Tower (also known as Clock Tower) which was connected with the ancient city walls date back to the Middle Ages.
Next to the castle is Villa Nani Mocenigo, a late Renaissance building featuring a spectacular outer staircase. The surrounding walls are decorated with allegorical statues which depict funny dwarfs built of local stone which aim at celebrating the surname of the noble family from Venice who commissioned the building of the palace.
Note the sumptuous villas, buildings and monuments which date back to the period when Venice dominated these territories, such as the palace of Monte di Pietà, which is now the seat of the tourist office, and the Sanctuary of the Seven Churches, which has attracted large numbers of pilgrims since the time it was built in the early seventeenth century. The precious artworks cherished by its chapels make this sanctuary one of the most appreciated destinations for the lovers of art and architecture flocking to the province of Padua.
Among the most appreciated sacred buildings, not to be missed are the ancient parish church of St. Giustina, which was built in 1256 in the late Romanesque style and whose interior cherishes precious works of art, and the Romanesque churches of St. Tommaso and St. Martino, which are situated in the nearby hamlets of Petriolo and San Martino in Piano respectively.
In September, Monselice organizes the so-called Giostra della Rocca medieval palio. Tourists flocking to the village will have the possibility to attend absorbing competitions, dances, parades and the picturesque medieval street market which is arranged in front of the Civic Tower, just in the heart of Piazza Mazzini.
