Visiting Mesagne
The small municipality of Mesagne, which is situated in the province of Brindisi, is idyllically set just in the heart of the Salentine Messapian plain, and develops 15 kilometres far from both the Adriatic Sea and the provincial capital. The municipal territory is mainly flat, but the old town rises on the top of a sweet hill which overlooks one of the most famous Roman routes, the popular Via Appia Antica.
Hotels in Mesagne, which are provided with modern comforts and excellent facilities, are situated just in the heart of privileged, strategic positions, which give guests the possibility to admire the outstanding Apulian Baroque architectures cherished by this wonderful artistic city. Mesagne's elegant and welcoming guest houses make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions across the surrounding territory. The local farm houses, which are hosted inside ancient rural complexes, give guests the possibility to experience a closer touch with nature, and to enjoy the fascination of ancient traditions.
The city's most representative monument is the Swabian Norman Castle, which was built in the Norman Period (around 1062) and is flanked by a 22-metre-high quadrangular tower. This ancient defensive bulwark, which has recently undergone extensive renovation works, has been turned into an elegant palace, and is the seat of the interesting Ugo Granafei Archaeological Museum
The castle, which is situated inside the walls of the ancient village, is flanked by the majestic All Saints Church, which was realized between 1649 and 1660. This outstanding architectural treasure, which is the most important example of the Apulian Baroque style, boasts a single nave, a Latin cross and a sumptuous facade, which is embellished by the typical architectural patterns of the three major orders.
A short distance from the church is the XVI-century Palazzo Guarini, whose interior hosts one of the 25 underground oil presses. It dates back to the XVIII century, and still retains an ancient tank, the huge buhrstone and the so-called Calabria-style olive press.
The city centre is surrounded by fascinating archaeological areas which date back to the Messapian Era. 5 kilometres far from Mesagne is Muro Tenente Archaeological park, an ancient fortified settlement which is totally surrounded by imposing, well-preserved walls.
