Merano (German: Meran) is the second most important and most densely populated resort in the province of Bolzano and the major centre of Burgraviato district. Situated on the slopes of the surrounding mountains, just upon the intersection among Val Venosta, Val Passiria, Val d’Adige and Val d’Ultimo, Merano is dominated by the high peaks of Gruppo Tessa, which mark the watershed between Italy and Austria, and Salto plateau.
