Visiting Melendugno
Melendugno, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, is situated just in the heart of the central-eastern Salentine Peninsula, and develops just few kilometres far from the Adriatic Coast. The major attractions of this city, which gathers seven hamlets and covers one of the largest territories of the province, are its enchanting seaside resorts, which extend along the local 15-kilometre-long coastline.
The hotels of the old town give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices. Melendugno's guest houses, which are situated a short distance from the major seaside resorts of the surrounding area, give guests the possibility to take advantage of welcoming bedrooms and modern comforts. The local residences, which are situated just in the heart of the lush pinewood forests which overlook the sea, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those looking for the utmost relax and tranquillity.
Melendugno's most representative sacred building is the Abbey of St. Niceta, the city's patron saint, which was erected by Basilian monks in 1167. This Romanesque-Gothic church, which has rectangular plan, boasts a sumptuous vaulted dome supported by three Gothic arches which can be seen along the side walls.
Apart from gathering numerous medieval courtyard houses, the old town also cherishes some famous hypogean mills (the so-called “trappiti”), which were dug into the rock and were once used to produce olive oil.
Not to be missed is the star-shaped plan of Palazzo D'Amely, the so-called castello, which was erected in the XVI century. This impressive building is characterized by a high polygonal tower featuring battered base.
Apart from gathering exceptional artistic beauties, Melendugno's territory also boasts enchanting natural landscapes, such as the marine cave of St. Cristoforo and the impressive cliffs of Torre Sant'Andrea.
