Visiting Massafra

Massafra, a small municipality of the province of Taranto, develops on the slopes of the Southern Apennines, and is surrounded by fascinating hilly plateaus and large plains which extend up to the Ionian  coastline. The city centre, which is situated 17 kilometrs far from the provincial capital, develops around the ravines of San Marco and Madonna della Scala.

Hotels in Massafra, which are idyllically set just in the heart of enchanting natural landscapes, gather comfortable and spacious bedrooms which are able to suit even guests' most demanding requirements. Massafra's guest houses, which are situated few kilometres far from the Ionian coastline, give guests the opportunity to take advantage of excellent services and facilities, such as swimming pools, tennis courts, conference rooms and free shuttle buses to the nearby beaches. The local farmhouses, which are idyllically set just in the heart of the fertile Ionian-Salentine plain, give guests the possibility to taste traditional local specialities while sipping excellent Apulian wines.

The city's most representative landmark is the Sanctuary of Madonna della Scala, which is hosted inside the homonymous ravine and is surrounded by fascinating landscapes and picturesque archaeological areas. This monumental complex, which was erected in 1730 over the remains of an old chapel, boasts a precious Baroque facade and a majestic staircase whose 125 stairs flank the whole ravine.
The city's old town, which overlooks San Marco's ravine, is dominated by the X-century Massafra Castle. It gathers three circular towers and an octagonal bulwark which are connected to each other through the impressive city walls. The city's most important historical palace is Villino ex Margherita, which boasts an outstanding combination of Gothic, Medieval and Renaissance architectural patterns. The upper balcony of Palazzo De Notaristefani, which is now the seat of the Town Hall, still retains two peculiar octagonal chimneys.
One of the city's most popular events is the amazing Massafrese Carnival, which is one of the oldest in Apulia. The festival, which begins in January 17, gives participants the possibility to take part in its funny entertainment activities and amazing initiatives and events.
