Visiting Martano

Martano, which is situated in the province of Lecce, lies just in the heart of the so-called Salentine Greece hellenophone linguistic island, which rises on the top of a gentle sloping plateau. This municipality, which is one of the most densely populated of Salento's Greek community, is situated 20 kilometrs far from the provincial capital. Local inhabitants still use Griko, a form of a Greek language which is spoken by people in the Magna Graecia region in southern Italy.

Martano's hotels and accommodation facilities are surrounded by enchanting landscapes and outstanding natural settings. Martano's hotels are the ideal accommodation facilities for both tourists and families interested in spending pleasant holidays here based on the utmost relax and tranquillity. The old town and the surrounding countryside are peppered with comfortable guest houses belonging to every category and intimate family-run farm houses.

The city's Chiesa Matrice, which is dedicated to Madonna Assunta, boasts an elegant Baroque facade of great beauty. This imposing building, which was built of local stone from Lecce in 1596 to replace the ancient Byzantine structure, still retains the original sculptured columns and the column-bearing lions which surmount the entrance gate. The church's interior, which has Latin cross, contains some XVII- and XVIII-century Baroque altars and a peculiar wooden ceiling which dates back to the eighteenth century.
Walking down the streets of the old town, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the so-called Case a Corte, the typical houses of the Salentine Peninsula which are provided with a common courtyard. Apart from playing a fundamental social role, the courtyard also gathered important common services, such as barns dug into the rock, large stone tanks (the so-called "pile") to wash clothes and huge rainwater cisterns. Palazzo Andrichi-Moschettini, which was commissioned by local authorities and erected between 1710 and 1720, is a typical example of civic architecture. It boasts a sumptuous portal and a long balcony supported by a series of brackets and blind arches.
The city's major monument is the Aragonese Castle, which was built in the XV century, was subsequently remodelled several times and was then turned into a stately home in the second half of the seventeenth century. This quadrangular fortress is flanked by two impressive cylindrical towers and encircled by imposing walls.
The whole surrounding area is scattered with precious archaeological remains, such as Teofilio Menhir, which is the highest in Apulia, and Specchia dei Mori, which is the most impressive heap of limestone blocks in the whole Salento.
