Visiting Margherita Di Savoia

The small municipality of Margherita di Savoia, which is situated in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, is surrounded by the glorious landscapes of the so-called Tavoliere delle Puglie. Situated south of the Gargano Peninsula, it overlooks the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. It is a renowned thermal resort, and its name derives from the local salt pans, which stand out as the largest saltworks in the Mediterranean basin.

Comfortable hotels in Margherita di Savoia, which are situated few metres far from the sea, give guests the possibility to take advantage of exclusive beaches, luxury spa establishments and modern beauty centres. The local guest houses, which gather elegant bedrooms and large balconies overlooking the sea, give guests the possibility to spend pleasant holidays based on the utmost fun and relax. Residences, bungalows and independent villas in Margherita di Savoia, which are situated a short distance from compelling beaches of golden sand, give guests the possibility to eat tasty traditional specialities from Apulia.

Not to be missed is the tour of the salt pans,  which is an interesting experience for both cultural tourists, who will have the opportunity to visit the original location of one of the major arterial routes of the Roman period, the famous Via Salaria, and the lovers of nature, whose attention will be catched by rare species of animals and plants. The original Historical Museum of the Salt Pan gives visitors the possibility to make an outstanding virtual journey across the historical vicissitudes experienced by the local dynasty, which are strictly interwoven with this arid lunar landscape, that is dotted with salt dunes and illuminated by the iridescent reflections of the rock salt.
The coastal area is connected with the old town by means of fascinating narrow streets which culminate in the majestic Church of St. Salvatore, that was built at the end of the nineteenth century over the remains of a pre-existent structure dating back to 1794. It still retains a precious bell from Agnone's papal foundry, which dates back to 1595, and a splendid sixteenth-century painting depicting St. Salvatore, the city's patron saint.
The surrounding territory is still peppered with some impressive examples of military architecture. Notwithstanding its deterioration due to marine erosion, the so-called Torre Pietra, which was erected in 1568, can still be observed along the road which leads to the salt pans. The 13-metre-high Tower of the Salt Pans, which is also known as Torrione, is situated just in the heart of the city centre. These towers were used to carry out the principal customs activities connected with salt extraction, but also suited defensive purposes, since they were employed as sighting posts against sea attacks.
