Visiting Manfredonia
Manfredonia, a thriving centre of the province of Foggia, is idyllically set just in the heart of an intimate cove of the southern Adriatic Coast, and it is backed by the impressive Gargano Promontory. The northern side of the surrounding area is dominated by the high mountains of the lush Gargano National Park, that also includes the compelling beaches of fine sand of the homonymous gulf.
Hotels in Manfredonia, that are surrounded by enchanting natural settings, boast breathtaking views over the splendid underlying bay. The local guest houses, that distribute few metres far from golden beaches, intimate coves and fascinating rock spurs, give tourists the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here while taking advantage of beach umbrellas, mattresses and further facilities. The city's residences gather splendid bungalows with independent entrance, and are complemented by further excellent services and facilities, such as swimming pools, restaurants, modern sports clubs and funny entertainment centres.
The city centre is dominated by the impressive Castle of Manfredonia, that was erected in the XIII century. The fortress, that was repeatedly remodelled over the course of the centuries, still retains imposing inner city walls, three cylindrical towers, a quadrangular bulwark and other impressive walls that encircle the inner ones and are crowned by four lower cylindrical towers.
The precious archaeological remains cherished by Manfredonia's National Museum illustrate the history of Daunia people and the surrounding lagoon. Established in 1968 inside the local Swabian-Angioin Castle, it contains an interesting collection of stone funerary monuments, the so-called stele daune (VIII-VI century B.C.).
The Cathedral of St. Lorenzo Maiorano, the city's patron saint, cherishes splendid examples of medieval art, such as the icon and wooden statue of Madonna di Siponto and a huge Byzantine wooden crucifix dating back to the XIII century.
The lovers of speleology won't miss the opportunity to visit Scaloria Cave, that was discovered in 1931 in the northern suburbs of the city. This paleolithic cave cherishes precious archaeological finds, such as the remains of some painted ceramic vases.
