Visiting Maglie

Maglie, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, is situated just in the heart of Otranto's hinterland, halfway between the northern terraced fields of the Murge Plateau and the southern Salentine Peninsula. The city, which is provided with an excellent road and rail network, is situated in a privileged geographical position, just in the heart of the middle-lower Salentine Peninsula.

Maglie gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options. The local hotels are situated just in the heart of the old town, a short distance from the city's major monuments and attractions, while its modern guest houses rise a short distance from the city's principal communication routes. Maglie's bed and breakfasts and farm houses are the ideal accommodation facilities for families with children who are interested in spending pleasant holidays here at reasonable prices.

Maglie's most important church is the Duomo or Chiesa Grande, which is named after St. Nicola, the city's patron saint. This impressive building, which was concluded in 1767, boasts a majestic mixtilinear Baroque facade. Its interior cherishes splendid Baroque altars which were largely made of local stone from Lecce and plenty of outstanding eighteenth-century masterpieces of great value, such as the presbytery's wooden choir and organ. The lovers of architecture won't miss the opportunity to admire the impressive Bell Tower of the Duomo. This tower, which is one of the highest in the province, is 48 metres high, and it was built between 1686 and 1690 using Lecce's local stone. The first four square-shaped floors gathers Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Tuscan orders, while the last octagonal-shaped floor is surmounted by a small majolica covered dome.
The lovers of archaeology won't miss the opportunity to visit the numerous Dolmens, Menhirs and further megalithic monuments which pepper the whole surrounding territory.
Not to be missed is the so-called Alca cultural complex, which is hosted inside the twentieth-century Palazzo Sticchi. Apart from cherishing one of the most ancient public libraries of Apuilia, it is also home to "Decio De Lorentiis" Civic Museum of Paleontology and Palaeoethnology, which is the only museum dealing with the prehistoric reconstruction of the Salentine territory in Southern Italy.
