The small municipality of Magione, which was once known as Pian di Carpine, develops 20 kilometres far from Perugia, along the eastern shores of Lake Trasimeno. Situated on the top of a lush green hill, it is dominated by the fascinating square-shaped fifteenth-century castle which was once the seat of the Knights Templar and is still owned by the Order of St. John.

Magione's most representative monument is the Castle of the Knights Hospitaller, which is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Umbria. The medieval complex, which dates back to the XII century, was turned into the current building in the fifteenth century, and still retains the ancient hospitium which once hosted pilgrims on their way to Rome and Jerusalem. Not to be missed are the Church of St. John the Baptist, which was erected in 1571 by the Knights Hospitaller and then frescoed by Gerardo Dottori, and the Church of St. Maria delle Grazie, which was built between the XIII and the XIV cenrtury and then subsequently remodelled in the eighteenth century. Magione is a traditional holiday destination for the lovers of sport, since it host the so-called Autodromo of Umbria, a popular circuit which is often the venue for important Italian motorcycle and car racing competions.
