Magenta is a small municipality situated in the province of Milan. The tour of Magenta's old town could start from the Basilica of St. Martino, which was realized between the nineteenth and the twentieth century to celebrate those who died during the homonymous battle, which took place in 1859 between the army of Napoleon III and the Austrians. The building is famous for its neo-Renaissance style, the monumental size, the colourful marbles, statues and bas-reliefs of the high altar, the impressive wooden altars, which are sumptuously carved or painted, and the great cycles of frescos which embellish the interiors.
The XIV-century church of St. Maria Assunta stands next to the ancient monastery of the Celestines. The sober Romanesque style of the original outer walls is dramatically offset by the sumptuous Baroque decorations of the interior, which cherishes two important paintings realized by Bergognone in 1501.
Not to be missed are the city's major civic buidlings and villas: Palazzo Crivelli Pecchio Martinoni, a XVII-century aristocratic residence which is now the seat of the Town Hall, Villa Crivelli Boisio Beretta, a splendid example of a XV-century stately home, the Baroque Palazzo Morandi and plenty of further palaces which crown via Garibaldi.
Apart from inestimable artistic and historical finds, Magenta also gathers plenty of environmental beauties and naturalistic attractions, such as the Park of Ticino. The lovely hamlet of Pontevecchio di Magenta is home to the enchanting Riserva Fagiana, which was once the game preserve of Vittorio Emanuele II and is now a lush oasis which still retains the original habitats of the Po Valley. Thick woods of oak trees, poplars and willows flank the course of the river and provide a charming backdrop for 30 kilometres of paths, which give tourists the possibility to go walking or cycling, admire a great variety of animal species or visit interesting naturalistic museums. Those flocking to the reserve will have the opportunity to eat at traditional inns or holiday farms which serve tasty local staples, such as rice-based dishes, sliced meats and salami and cheese.
