Visiting Lucera

Lucera, a lovely centre of the province of Foggia, rises on the top of a gentle slope including three hills that develops a short distance from Daunia Mountains and Gargano Promontory. Idyllically set just in the heart of Tavoliere delle Puglie, it has always been dubbed "Apulia Key” for its strategic position.

Hotels in Lucera, that are situated just in the heart of the old town of this enchanting artistic city, gather elegant bedrooms furnished with style. The local guest houses, that are situated few kilometres far from the city centre, gather modern beauty centres, restaurants, convention areas and meeting rooms. Lucera is also scattered with charming B&Bs, that gather intimate flats equipped with every comfort. The city's farm houses, that distribute far from chaos and the hectic city life, give guests the possibility to taste excellent organic products and delicious local staples.

One of the city's most representative historic-artistic landmarks is the Swabian-Angioin Fortress, that was commissioned by Frederick II in 1233. It was subsequently turned into a military garrison by Charles I of Anjou, who commissioned the building of imposing walls, square-shaped towers and cylindrical bulwarks.
Lucera's eastern suburbs host one of the largest and oldest amphitheatres of Southern Italy. This elliptical-shaped Roman Amphitheatre, that could accommodate up to 18.000 people, still retains two imposing portals supported by beautiful Ionian columns decorated with splendid bas-reliefs.
The central Piazza Duomo is dominated by the forteenth-century Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta. This splendid Gothic-Angioin Duomo boasts a splendid asymmetrical facade. It is flanked by a square-shaped tower surmounted by a pyramidal lantern, and by a high octogonal bell tower.
The glorious surrounding countryside is scattered with precious historical finds and remains and dotted with enchanting naturalistic areas. The nearby Fontanelle District is dominated by a huge oak tree that is protected by WWF. This 30-metre-high specimen, that is known as Santa Justa alla Melara Oak, is 900 years old.
