Lizzanello, a small municipality of the province of Lecce, is idyllically set just in the heart of the lowland of Cupa Valley, and it is surrounded by ancient olive groves and the glorious Salentine peninsula. Located north of Serre di Galugnano, it is situated 8 kilometres far from the provincial capital, and also includes the small hamlet of Merine.

Its enchanting landscape and the proximity with one of the most beautiful artistic cities in Italy make Lizzanello a highly appreciated tourist destination. The hotels and guest houses of the old town are situated a short distance from Salento's major artistic beauties and architectural masterpieces. Lizzanello's farm houses are situated a short distance from the old town, and are totally surrounded by the cheerful colours and flavours of the lush Apulian countryside.

The ancient village is dominated by the Church of St. Lorenzo Nuovo, which was erected in the XVI century. This building, which was repeatedly restored, was once used as a small fortress, when its terraces were equipped with petraries and catapults. Note the cornice's pillars on the left transept door, which are made up of two monolithic blocks which are similar to menhirs. The main XVIII-century facade is commanded by two impressive bell towers. A short distance from the city centre are the remains of the XI-century Church of St. Lorenzo Vecchio. The Romanesque chapel once featured two orders; the lower one was formed by huge irregular parallelepipeds, while the upper one was largely built of the typical regional stones.
Palazzo Paladini, which was commissioned by the homonymous family in 1436, is a splendid example of military architecture. This impressive building, which was repeatedly renovated, boasts a Neoclassical facade and still retains a cylindrical tower made of local stone and a peculiar seventeenth-century dovecote.
