Visiting Licata

Licata, an important municipality of the province of Agrigento, develops along the coast for almost 20 kilometres. Its eastern side boasts compelling beaches of fine sand, while the western part is covered with high cliffs and impressive rock spurs.

Licata's welcoming hotels, that are situated a short distance from both the sea and the enchanting landscapes of the surrounding area, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in spending pleasant holidays here. The local guest houses, that distribute around the beach and the major tourist areas, gather modern comforts and spacious bedrooms. The local residences are able to suit even the most demanding requirements of different kinds of tourists.

Licata's territory is covered with interesting archaeological sites of great value dating back to the period comprised between the Neolithic Age and the Byzantine Period.
Tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy Licata's compelling beaches and beguiling, crystal-clear sea, as well as to admire the outstanding historic and architectural beauties of the old town. The Church of Carmine, that is flanked by the Convent of Annunziata, boasts a sumptuous Baroque interior that contains precious paintings and ancient tombs. The Church of St. Salvatore was erected in 1563, but was subsequently remodelled in 1697. An underground crypt containing an altar, some charnel houses and some drainers has recently been unearthed in its single-nave interior.
Other religious monuments worthy of mention are the Church of the Purgatory, the Church of St. Domenico, the Church of St. Maria, the oldest in the city, and  the Church and Monastery of Sant’Angelo. Piazza Progresso, that is the city's major square, is dominated by Palazzo di Città, a huge architectural complex that also includes the clock tower and the Town Hall. Its interior cherishes precious remains dating back to the Greek domination, a fifteenth-century statue of Madonna and Child and a triptych realized in 400. The eighteenth-century Palazzo Frangipane boasts a sumptuous Baroque facade and a splendid entrance portal leading to a stunning vaulted courtyard.
The surrounding territory is punctuated with elegant Art-Nouveau villas, that mainly distribute around the slopes of Colle Monserrato. Villa Urso, that was erected in the second half of the nineteenth century, is embellished by a a high tower and an elegant portico.
